(4/30/19 – Jim Allen) … Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico will host the high-powered 950-horsepower sprint cars of the King of the West-NARC Fujitsu Racing Series, this Saturday, May 4th, with the lucrative and very popular Dave Bradway Jr. Memorial race.

The 29th Annual event, which pays tribute to the late Northern Auto Racing Club star who lost his life in a 1987 racing accident, will award nearly $30,000 to competitors.  A large portion of these funds are generated through the tremendous support of race fans and friends of the driver who step up and contribute to the purse each year.  The winner of the 40-lap headliner will pocket $4000, plus a share of $5200 in lap money paid to the top three positions on each lap.

This marks the second race of the 60th Anniversary season for the King of the West-NARC 410 winged sprint cars, and the first of only two visits to the high-banked quarter mile oval located at the fairgrounds.

The Bradway event is regarded as a “bucket list” item for many California drivers.  Past winners include legendary drivers and champions of 410 sprint car racing, ranging from Randy Tiner and Jimmy Sills, to multiple-time series champions Brent Kaeding and Jonathan Allard.

For Roseville’s Willie Croft, laying claim to last year’s Bradway event was an emotional affair that allowed him to check off a yet another milestone victory in his successful sprint car career.

“This race meant so much to me because of the history between my wife (Samantha) and her racing family and also just being a fan of Juniors,” explains Croft, a winner of nine career King of the West-NARC victories. “Dave taught my wife how to ride a bicycle, so how can I not be a fan?”

“I’m really not a numbers guy,” continued Croft, referring to the number of career wins, “but winning the Bradway, the Trophy Cup, the Mini-Gold Cup and some other really cool races just means the world to me, especially since I don’t come from a racing family.  It’s very satisfying to get those victories purely on hard work and getting myself into a position to do so.”

Croft will be looking to defend his 2018 win against a long list of Golden State heroes who are looking to add this victory to their open wheel resumes.  They include last season’s points runner-up Shane Golobic of Elk Grove; current point leader Dominic Scelzi of Fresno; Hollister’s Ryan Bernal; Chase Johnson of Penngrove; Hanford’s DJ Netto and many others.

There are several other lucrative prizes up for grabs at the Bradway, including an $1000 bonus to the driver winning the Mike Avila Fast Time Award.  That’s a great payoff for a 12-second lap around the high-banked quarter-mile oval.  In addition, the Swift Metal Finishing Hardcharger, the driver who passes the most cars during the feature event, will earn an $1000 bonus, thanks to sponsorship backing from several companies.  Add to that about $4,000 in product awards and focus in the pit area is at an all-time high.

Other’s expected to compete on Saturday include 2017 series champion Bud Kaeding of Campbell; women drivers Jenna Frazier of Sacramento and Chelsea Blevins of Susanville; Atwater drivers Nathan Rolfe and Sean Watts; Mitchell Faccinto of Hanford;  Chico’s Kenny Allen; and rookies Stephen Ingraham of Fair Oaks, Geoff Ensign of Sebastopol and Kyle Offill of Tracy.

The King of the West-NARC racing format includes qualifying, four 10-lap heat-races, the Sunnyvalley Bacon trophy dash, a 12-lap Last Chance Qualifier, and the 40-lap Fujitsu/Hoosier sponsored headliner.

Pit gates will open at 3:00 p.m.  Front gates open at 5:00 p.m.  Qualifying gets underway at 6:30 p.m.
