(Sacramento, 10/9/18) … For some open wheel racing fans, Saturday’s (October 13th) 33rd Annual Penny Newman Grain Cotton Classic at Keller Auto Speedway might represent a slice of sprint car heaven. Consider it a sprint car racing extravaganza or sprint car racing-squared! In an unprecedented event, there will be three traveling series invading the 3/8 mile oval in Hanford, providing fans with the best of all worlds.
Featured on this comprehensive racing program will be the 410 sprint cars of the King of the West-Fujitsu Racing Series, the Sprint Car Challenge Tour 360’s, and the 305 Racesavers sprinters in three complete racing programs, featuring more than 200-laps of wheel-to-wheel action.
At least a dozen drivers will be competing in both a 410 and 360 sprint car looking for the opportunity to walk away with more than $8000 in prize money, plus bonuses by winning multiple main events. More than 80 teams are expected to fill the pit area – equating to more than 55,000 combined horsepower.
Leading the King of the West-NARC series will be current championship point leader Kyle Hirst of Paradise, CA. Entering last weekend’s event at Kern County Raceway Park, Hirst held a comfortable advantage in his mission to claim a fourth King of the West-NARC crown. However, an accident at the beginning of that race ended his night and his once sizable points lead took a serious hit. Compounding that DNF was the eventual victory by Elk Grove’s Shane Golobic, a driver who has been shadowing him in the points race all season.
With all of that in mind, and only two races remaining, Hirst now leads Golobic by a slim 1270-1257 margin; or the difference between winning the main event and 12th place. In addition, qualifying points are in play, which makes that margin even smaller. Anything can happen and the newly configured Keller Auto Speedway will provide the battleground on Saturday.
Hirst is also the current SCCT point leader by a comfortable margin.
Golobic’s victory was his fourth of the season and he feels reinvigorated in his quest for his first King of the West-NARC title in the Fresno, CA-based Tarlton Motorsports sprinter.
“The Tarlton’s are a 410 racing staple in California,” said Golobic, “and they hired me to win a championship. That is something that I’ve never done, because I haven’t run the entire King of the West schedule before. And to get the win at Kern County keeps us close to that goal.
“When it comes down the points chase, there is nobody in California that would be more prestigious to beat,” continued Golobic.” “If you’re going to win in the 410’s, you have to beat Kyle Hirst.”
The pits will be filled with a “who’s who” of open wheel racing in California. Some of them include Bud Kaeding of Campbell; Chase Johnson of Penngrove; Roseville driver’s Willie Croft and Colby Copeland; Hanford’s DJ Netto and Mitchell Faccinto; Sean Watts and Nathan Rolfe of Atwater; rookie drivers Dustin Golobic (Fremont) and Jenna Frazier (Sacramento); Jason Statler of Grass Valley; Justyn Cox of Sacramento, and many many others.
Keller Auto Speedway is located at the fairgrounds in Hanford. Advance tickets are available at www.Universe.com.
Pit gates open at 2:00 p.m. Front gates open at 4:30 p.m. Happy hour for race fans is 4:30-6:00 p.m. Racing gets underway at 7:00 p.m. For more information, you can go to racekingsspeedway.com or NARC410.com.
